Mongolian Electronic Identity Card
The Mongolian electronic identity card is the primary identification document for Mongolian citizens.
Mongolian citizens are required to apply for their first electronic identity card upon reaching the age of 16. The application must be submitted in person because the registration process includes the collection of the applicant’s biometric and other unique personal identification data.
Electronic identity cards must also be renewed when a citizen reaches the ages of 25 and 45. Each renewal requires the applicant to register their biometric and identification data in person at the nearest State Civil Registration Office in Mongolia or at a Mongolian diplomatic mission authorised to provide this service.
Once the application has been processed, the electronic identity card will be produced in Mongolia and delivered to the Embassy of Mongolia for collection.
Please note that the delivery time may vary depending on the schedule and frequency of Mongolia’s official diplomatic mail service.
Required Documents
Applicants must submit the following:
- Mongolian birth certificate and valid Mongolian passport, for first-time applicants aged 16;
- expired electronic identity card for renewals at the ages of 25 and 45;
- another Mongolian identity document, where the previous identity card has been lost; and
Additional documents may be requested depending on the applicant’s circumstances.

Birth Registration
A child born abroad to one or both Mongolian parents may be eligible for registration as a Mongolian citizen and for the issuance of a Mongolian birth certificate.
Under Mongolian law, parents are required to register the birth of their child within 30 days of the date of birth at the Embassy in-person.
Please note that Mongolia does not recognise dual citizenship. Where parents fail to register the child’s birth within the legally prescribed period of 30 days, additional documents will be required to confirm that the child has not acquired the citizenship of another country.
A Mongolian birth certificate cannot be issued if the child has already been registered as a citizen of another country, beyond the legally prescribed period of 30 days.
Required documents:
- ID or passport of the parent/s,
- Filled-out application,
- Written statement by the parent/s,
- Medical certificates (Zarojelentes).

Marriage Registration
Under Article 7.1 of the Law of Mongolia on Civil State Registration, persons wishing to register their marriage must prepare the required documents and appear in person before the relevant civil registration authority.
Mongolian citizens wishing to register their marriage through the Embassy must attend the Embassy in person.
The couple must also provide at least one witness in accordance with Mongolian law. Witness must:
- be a Mongolian citizens;
- be at least 18 years of age; and
- attend the marriage registration in person.
Required documents:
- ID or passport of the persons wishing to register their marriage,
- Filled-out application,
- Written statements by the persons wishing to register their marriage,
- Medical certificates (HIV, Tuberculosis and mental health) OR Marriage certificate issued in Hungary, Serbia or other third country.
